Internet of Things and Privacy

Nowadays, technology is more accessible than ever, that is largely thanks to better and cheaper and more accessible processors that make the foundation of computers. With that, everyday more and more people are getting access to the internet or some form of technology. Those devices and technology have become a part of our everyday life. Some people may only see their relatives once in a day. However, they have their smartphone, laptop with them the whole day even when they are in bed. There is also speculation that one day some people may not be able to live without their smart device with them. This means that people are more dependent on technology than ever, and that gives an advantage to the Internet of Things.

  •        What is Internet of Things

The Internet of Things is a system that’s objective is interconnect everything to the internet with the help of interrelated computing devices. The Internet of Things allows every object, animal, machine, device and people to automatically transporting and exchanging data over a network with other devices that have access to the internet(Steve, 2020). Until now, there are billions of devices and everyday objects that are inserted with chips that give them access to the internet and are transmitting data over network to a cloud. What we could say about the objective of the Internet of Things is that it is trying to make everything around us responsive, coming to life with the help of sensors, and giving them access to the internet to share data with other devices or storing them in a cloud (Steve, 2020). All of this makes people believe that the Internet of Things is the fourth industrial revolution of the world.

  • Benefits of Internet of Things

The Internet of Things is getting bigger and bigger. Every year, hundreds of billions of dollars are spent on the Internet of Things. And in 2019 alone 745 billion dollars is spent and is expected to reach 1 trillion dollars in 2020 (Steve, 2020). Now you might wonder what it is that makes people spend hundreds of billions of dollars for. And the answer to that is the potential of the Internet of Things in the near future. There is a prediction from an expert that in 2020 half of all the new business will be running on the Internet of Things (Steve, 2020). On Top of that, the Internet of Things gathers data, stores them and processes and analysts to get a better understanding of an activity and able to come up with a better solution to a problem or plan of action to improve the wellbeing of a person. The Internet of Things could be the one that would help a person potential exceed their limits. And in the near future we could see people having better lifestyles, doctors perform better, sport become more competitive and more convenient for customers, that is because our activity and habit on internet can be track by Internet of Things to study and better understand human behavior(Steve, 2019). The Internet of Things is also an advantage for business as well. With the help of the Internet of Things, businesses will be able to better target their customers and advertise the product that the customer needs which will result in a better chance of reaching the customer. Manufacturing companies or firms will also benefit from the Internet of Things as well. With the help of the Internet of Things, they will be able to track the process of their manufacturing better and faster response to any issues within the production allow for changes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the production( Steve, 2020). Firms are also able to install sensors into their own product to track and transmit information about the product such as lifespan, usage to the manufacture to identify room for improvement of the products (Steve, 2020).

  • Privacy Issue

The Internet of Things is not without its flaws. One thing that is most associated with the internet is the issue with user privacy. Most people usually think that the information on the internet is free for all, however that is far from the truth. We pay for the information with our privacy. Companies track our action and activity and interest on the internet. And with that information, companies could use them to help improve the user experience or in some cases your information could be sold to other companies for advertisement or to sell products (EPIC.org, 2020). This is without a dough a serious issue for users as some people find it creepy and scary when finding out that their action on the internet is being watched.
